ABOUT THE BEEHIVES

My Pretty Bee Hives are available either directly through me (send me an email) or through Etsy or Ebay, whichever one you’re more comfortable with. Each hive has a link to both sites.

All beehives are made of premium pine (long lasting and safe for the bees), purchased assembled from reputable bee supply stores, painted with two coats of exterior non toxic/low VOC latex paint, and then the artwork begins!

Painting on wood isn’t as easy as you’d think – it’s not like painting on canvas where everything is smooth and soft. Wood has knots and grains and when you think you have a smooth line, you find out there has been a bleed in one direction – so it is time consuming and delicate work, and has taken me months and months to master the art of painting precisely on a beehive.

What’s included? I include a Deep (brood chamber) and a Medium (Honey Super) – and don’t usually include any other components. Why not? a) shipping everything makes it much more expensive, as larger boxes are needed and the hive is that much heavier, as it’s already assembled and b) the other components are typically individual choices and preferences. Some people like solid bottom boards, some like screened, some like screened with inserts – some people like screened inner covers (which I HATE), some (like me) prefer solid inner covers with that hole or opening in it. Some people want queen excluders, some want plastic (not a fan), and some want stainless steel/metal (which I prefer) – and the telescoping lid is also something some people want, some people don’t – some people prefer migratory lids, for example. Frames are also a personal choice – some like plastic with built in foundation (not a fan), some like wood with wax foundation, or with plastic foundation with wax layers, and some like foundationless frames – so it’s all personal preference. I don’t like the foundationless frames because it makes the bees work that much harder to draw out comb, but if you’re interested in selling comb-in honey, then foundationless would be your choice. I always go with wood frames and either wax foundation, or plastic with layers of wax rubbed in.

If you’re in south Florida and you know what you want, I can certainly get everything for you – bottom board, lid, you name it! You can come and collect it in person, but just let me know well in advance what you need.

THE MODERN COLLECTION

For those wonderful little worker bees who dare to dream and who have great imaginations, this MODERN collection is for them. The most modern, exciting and brightly colored collection, it is designed for those explorers and adventurers, with no limits and no boundaries, for our brave forager and scout bees who courageously go where no bee has gone before, in search of a food source or a new home. The Modern Collection will help guide them home again. Getting up there in age, between middle aged to elderly, these are the bravest of the brave.

THE NATURE COLLECTION

Designed with nature in mind, this collection is dedicated to wildlife and animals in general, the butterflies, the birds, the bees, African elephants, whales, turtles, our loving pets (cats and dogs) – you never know what you’re going to get with the Nature Collection, except it is dedicated to our living creatures. Right now there are two beautiful Nature hives available, “Garden” and “Ocean”, with more on the way. Please note, these are decorated with UV resistant, waterproof and fade-proof decals or transfers, they are not hand painted designs. Yes, the hives themselves have the normal two coats of Behr non-toxic low voc exterior latex paint as usual, but these beautiful creatures are not painted by hand.

Even the ducks were impressed when Sami showed up for the photoshoot – they came to see her in person! A live appearance by the Artist known as Sami is very rare indeed.

THE NEXT COLLECTION IS THE DREAMSCAPE COLLECTION

Designed with our dreams in mind, geometry, angles, spirals, illusions, patterns, spiral drawings, abstract designs, colors, black and white, all kinds of designs are possible in Dreamscape. For those designs in black and white, feel free to color them in but make sure you use acrylic WATERPROOF and FADE-PROOF NON TOXIC paint markers. Sometimes the coloring is the most fun part, sometimes it’s important to leave it in black and white, but whatever you decide, this will help guide your bees home.

THE MODERN NUC

It’s the MODERN NUC, and three sides are designed in the MODERN theme, while the migratory lid is designed with a DREAMSCAPE look. There is a touch of Sunburst on the front – that’s what the bees will be looking at when they orient to this hive. The back of the Nuc is just white, no design.
